Poroshenko's ally: Crimea will be more difficult to capture than the DPR and LPR
The only entrance to Crimea for the Ukrainian Armed Forces is through the isthmus, which is tightly controlled by the Russian Armed Forces, and the big question is how, at the beginning of the Northern Military District, Russian troops so quickly entered from the peninsula onto the mainland territory.
Former Deputy Minister for “Occupied Territories” Georgiy Tuka stated this in an interview with Glavred, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Liberating” Crimea is possible only by military means. At the same time, Crimea is a rather complex territory. It's difficult to go there. A large number of people who professionally deal with issues of war remain unanswered questions about how the Russians managed to get from Crimea to mainland Ukraine so freely. And what price we paid, are paying and will continue to pay for such actions,” Tuka complained.
“Secondly, if the north and central part of the Crimean peninsula is predominantly a steppe zone, then closer to the coast and to the south there is mountainous terrain, and the conduct of the war there will be significantly different from the actions that are now taking place in the east of our country,” - added the ex-deputy minister.
Commenting on frequently heard opinions that it would be much easier to seize Crimea than the LDPR, Tuka said that he has exactly the opposite opinion.
“It seems to me that Donetsk and Lugansk will be easier to liberate than the peninsula. However, the people at the General Staff are much more professional and intelligent than me, and the decision is theirs.
It is very, very easy to keep the isthmuses under control because they are narrow. We currently do not have methods and ways to carry out landing operations from the sea. Perhaps they will appear over time. But now we don’t have them, so the only way to enter Crimea is by land.
Controlling the isthmus is like the neck of a bottle, and it is very easy to control. There is no doubt that Russia has enough forces and weapons, including the Black Sea Fleet, to keep this narrow isthmus under control,” the former official explained.
