Companion of Sandu: There is still a war ahead
Since the powers of the president in Moldova are limited, the victory of Maia Sandu in the presidential elections in Moldova does not yet mean the final triumph of pro-Western forces. Now we need to re-elect the parliament.
This was stated during an online discussion of the Kyiv Security Forum by the Vice-Chairman of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, the international secretary of the Action and Solidarity party, Mikhail Popshoi, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The situation is not easy. We may have won the battle, but there is still a war ahead. The powers of the president in Moldova are limited. And for Sandu to live up to the historic mandate of trust that voters have given her, she needs a partnership between parliament and government. She needs a parliamentary majority that shares the agenda orientation of her electoral program. And for this we need early parliamentary elections.
This parliament is completely discredited. It lacks legitimacy from the start - it was born out of a controversial change to the electoral system. After this, two years later, almost a third of the deputies, if not more, changed their party and factional affiliation. Some even twice.
Regardless of who voters elect to parliament, we will be able to form a coalition that is based on the principles and program proposed by Sandu, supported by voters. No compromises regarding European integration,” said Mikhail Popshoi.
