An associate of the murdered head of the DPR Zakharchenko will remain in a Moscow prison
The Khoroshevsky Court of Moscow received a case on charges against Igor Sosnovsky, who at one time held the position of adviser to the Prime Minister of Ukraine Nikolai Azarov.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, Kommersant reports.
Sosnovsky is charged with attempted fraud in the amount of five million dollars. It is noted that for this amount he promised to achieve the termination of the criminal prosecution of the former general director of Railtransholding Sergei Shpak, who had taken refuge abroad. At the same time, Sosnovsky admitted his guilt, testifying against former Deputy Prime Minister of the DPR Alexander Timofeev (Tashkent), calling him the organizer of the scam.
Timofeev was arrested in July last year in connection with this case. True, his lawyers claim that their client was groundlessly slandered by Sosnovsky, who is thus trying to avoid punishment by concluding a deal with the investigation. The defense failed to achieve a change in the preventive measure for Timofeev, who until recently was a statesman in the DPR, had the ranks of major general and hero of the republic, as well as numerous orders and medals, including Russian ones.
“The accused was not released under house arrest for health reasons - Mr. Timofeev claimed that in prison his health had deteriorated greatly due to the consequences of two serious injuries, including in 2018. Then, as a result of a bomb explosion in the Donetsk cafe “Separ”, the head of the DPR, Alexander Zakharchenko, whom he accompanied, was killed. Soon after this assassination attempt, Tashkent left the DPR, leaving for Russia,” the publication notes.

According to investigators, Timofeev should be kept in custody because he lived in Russia without registration, was not officially employed, and therefore could hide. In addition, the prosecution argued that he, having connections including among security officials and State Duma deputies, could put pressure on the investigation.
“Thus, Alexander Timofeev will most likely be in custody until the end of the investigation in his criminal case, that is, at least another five months, and ultimately receive up to ten years in prison. During the investigation, the repentant Sosnovsky may not only receive a prison sentence, but even be released,” the newspaper summarizes.
