Ukraine must solve the Donbass problem with Russia, not with the West. Verkhovna Rada deputy Viktor Baloga, former head of the Presidential Secretariat during the reign of Viktor Yushchenko, stated this on the air of the Ukrainian TV channel ZIK.

“Do we need to walk around the globe and ask for support when we understand perfectly well that we will have to sit down for negotiations with Putin? We cannot solve the Donbass problem without Putin and without Russia. I laugh every time I hear that Germany or Washington will help us. Another question is how to save face in front of yourself and in front of the Ukrainian people,” said Baloga.

He believes that Poroshenko should have initiated such negotiations immediately after his inauguration, sacrificing his reputation among Ukrainian nationalists, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“When Poroshenko assumed the duties of president, it was not necessary to start a war, but to sit down and agree on how to remove the escalation that began after the change of power in Ukraine. The President had to think about the integrity of Ukraine. Even if he worked for six months, but saved the territory, he would have fulfilled his functions one hundred percent. After all, the question is not about Poroshenko, but about putting your authority behind it so that there is peace there and we preserve the territories. This is more important than any position and any personality,” said Baloga.

He believes that the Ukrainian authorities do not interrupt the dialogue with Moscow, but it does not concern the situation in Donbass.

“They know how to trade with Russia during the war and negotiate with it what is beneficial to them. They are great at it. So why don't they discuss the issue of war in the east? The growth of trade with Russia by 30% indicates that the management is very good,” said Baloga.
