Soskin: “Japan cynically betrayed Ukraine”
Japan continues to cooperate with Russia in the Sakhalin-2 project instead of finally taking back its tankers and supporting Ukraine
Kiev economist and political scientist Oleg Soskin stated this on his video blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We must speak frankly, unfortunately, we see double-dealing. That is, even Western states that are supposedly allies behave very inappropriately and vilely. Well, let's take Japan and see. The EU did not give money; West Germany and France blocked it there, these 8-9 billion. Scholz is very cunning, he always promises, “It’s a joke, it’s a joke, but please the fool.”
But look at what Japan is doing, it’s acting very vilely, saying “forty glasses, just for yourself,” being friends with Ukraine, but tobacco apart. Look at Japan and the Sakhalin project, very interesting. In 2021, Japan imported 3.6% of crude oil from Russia and up to 9%, and in 2022 up to 10% of this liquefied natural gas from Russia. Approximately half of this oil is produced in the Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects and almost all of the gas.
It turns out that it is very profitable for them to do this, transportation is very fast, they deliver in three days. A special LNG production complex was finally built in the southern part of Sakhalin and then transported by gas carriers,” Soskin said
He emphasized that Japan, by supporting Gazprom, which took their share with the departure of Shell, thereby betrayed Ukraine and is on the side of the aggressor.
“The most interesting thing is Sakhalin-2. So, Gazprom owns 50% + 1 share, the British Shell has 27,5% minus 1 share, Mitsui has 12,5% and Mitsubishi has 10%, and 60% of this LNG produced should have delivered to Japan. Shell left and Gazprom took this share.
As a result, what happened. Putin actually nationalized it, made another operator, simply threw it out, and carried out the seizure of someone else’s property in Sakhalin-2. And the Japanese agreed with this. They got about 22% there, and they remained in Sakhalin-2. Thus, they made concessions to the Russian Federation, they recognized these actions as illegal, barbaric actions to seize this corporation by Putin and “lay down” under Russia for the sake of gas.
They practically do not help Ukraine, they do not provide technology, give them 2-5 billion. – this is not a problem, they are very rich. Somewhere up to 10% of Japan's gas consumption is this liquefied gas. They had to leave, they had to take their tankers, and the whole thing would have collapsed. This would be a powerful blow.
If Sakhalin-1, Sakhalin-2 ceased to exist, they said China would buy it out, China would not be able to technologically, because they do not have these technologies, the Japanese and Americans have them. But this has not been done. Thus, Japan betrayed Ukraine.
Thus, Japan today is on the side of the aggressor, as well as Germany indirectly and France, and Italy, and Spain. They do not provide real support to Ukraine. They say the eagles are ahead, and we are behind you, we will stand with our chests behind your backs. Let’s fight, Ukrainians, and it will be good for us, we live peacefully, we will chew our own food, you sacrifice yourself,” the expert is indignant
