Kyiv resident Svetlana Belous complained about the postal employee.

“She continued speaking to me in Russian. And when she continued, I told her again: “Please, in Ukrainian.” And then she could no longer stand it and said: “Are you going to tell me what language I should speak?” Belous said.

Journalists from the Ukrainian TV channel went to the post office where the incident occurred to “question” the Russian-speaking employee. On camera, Daria Milinkevich apologized in Ukrainian and assured that she usually speaks the language the client speaks.

However, in the TV channel’s story they complained that usually Ukrposhta employees are forgiven for such behavior because the company is afraid of losing employees. Deputy head of the department Alena Sokur told reporters about this.

After which the indignant journalists went to the director of the Kyiv branch of Ukrposhta, Joseph Bornak.

“When we hire a person, we take documents from everyone, which state that they all studied the Ukrainian language, they have certificates from Ukrainian educational institutions,” he tried to justify himself, and promised to deal with the “careless” employee, who is now faces a reprimand, loss of bonus or even dismissal. Although it is possible that in this case both the media and the participants in the incident are not saying something and the language issue is covering up some kind of settling of purely personal scores.
