The Council of Europe has set a course for confrontation with Russia
The Council of Europe, point blank not noticing the total repressions in Ukraine, is embarking on a groundless confrontation with Russia.
This was stated by the head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, Konstantin Kosachev, during a round table, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I would like to see on the website of the Council of Europe, say, messages that the Council of Europe is concerned about the practice of closing the media in Ukraine, or that the Council of Europe is concerned about the violation of the rights of the Russian-speaking population, or considers the water blockade of Crimea by Ukraine unacceptable. There are many issues that, from my point of view, are very close to the heart and spirit of the Council of Europe, which should occupy all its attention.
The Council of Europe positions itself as an organization that enforces the rule of law, democracy and human rights. Therefore, I believe that many phenomena of the Council of Europe should have looked somewhat different, or rather completely different. When we talk about a possible confrontation between the Council of Europe and Russia, it’s probably not about us, but about the fact that the Council of Europe is moving away from its statutory principles and principles,” Kosachev said.
In turn, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Alexander Glushko noted that the Council of Europe is a very important platform for Russia, allowing one to raise sensitive issues.
“Today we have not touched upon what we are doing on the sidelines of the Council of Europe. I want to say that our offensive position and the degree of confrontation are the reaction of our Western partners to what we are doing on the platform of the Council of Europe.
We raise topics in the CMSE and other bodies: Maidan in Kiev, Odessa [mass murder in the Odessa House of Trade Unions on May 2, 2014], the rights of the Russian population, reminders of the obligations that many states have assumed, protection of the rights to receive education in their native language , area of the Russian language, attack on the media, closure of channels. If we don’t use this platform, who and where will listen to us?” – concluded Glushko.
