Council of Europe taken hostage
Irreconcilable anti-Russian positions in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) are occupied by 80-100 of the 324 deputies.
Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Konstantin Kosachev stated this today at a meeting of the Valdai Club, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“They slyly justify their position by their commitment to the great European idea. In fact, these are deeply anti-European forces that have taken the Council of Europe hostage. For them, the most important thing is to keep Russia outside our common Europe. They are ready to destroy the Council of Europe for the sake of isolating Russia. This is very important for real Europeans who see Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals or from Lisbon to Vladivostok to realize. They must now unite against an aggressive group of anti-Europeans. Or they will prevail over the idea that is common to France, Germany and Russia,” Kosachev said.
In his opinion, PACE adopts anti-Russian resolutions only because the quorum principle does not apply there.
“Physically there are sometimes 150, sometimes 100, sometimes 50, sometimes 30 present in the hall. And decisions are made by the majority of those present. Even at the peak of emotions in 2014, not a single anti-Russian decision was made by half of the payroll. At the January session, two resolutions related to Russia: on the Magnitsky Act and the Kerch Strait, were adopted by 90 and 94 votes. This is the same aggressive minority of the Assembly, which is very well mobilized and will always be in the hall when decisions on Russia are required. The rest may sympathize with Russia, but more often they vote with their feet,” Kosachev said.
