Federation Council bans British ambassador
The Federation Council Committee on Rules and Parliamentary Organization decided to deny the possibility of visiting the Federation Council and the presence there of the British Ambassador to the Russian Federation and other employees of the diplomatic embassy.
The head of the committee, Vyacheslav Timchenko, stated this today at a meeting of the Federation Council, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Some Western countries continue to make unfriendly and aggressive decisions towards Russia, its citizens and official diplomatic personnel. The next such step was the decision of the leadership of the British Parliament to ban the Russian Ambassador in London and other diplomats from visiting the Parliament building,” Timchenko said.
Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko supported the initiative.
“We are increasingly faced with unlawful, to put it mildly, and ill-considered decisions by the UK. She has something to do now. Let them take care of their internal affairs, but they prohibit our diplomats from entering their parliament - when did this ever happen?” Matvienko said.
Matvienko noted that even in the “most difficult times,” diplomats were not limited in visiting parliaments and other government bodies. According to her, this measure is “forced”, and after it “maybe colleagues” in the UK will “come to their senses.”
In June, the Guardian newspaper reported a ban on Russian Ambassador to Great Britain Andrei Kelin and other Russian diplomats from visiting the British Parliament building in London.
