26 out of 31 members of the regional council voted in support of this decision.
The document calls on the Italian government to condemn the EU sanctions policy towards the Russian Federation in connection with the annexation of Crimea.
Let us note that the draft resolution was proposed by opposition deputies who make up the majority in the local council. While the central government, to which, in fact, the resolution is addressed, is represented by supporters of sanitary measures against the Russian Federation.
According to the chairman of the Northern League party in the regional council of Liguria, Alessandro Piano, Europe has become a hostage to its own actions, and restrictive measures harm primarily the European Union, Italy and Liguria in particular. Alessandro Piano also noted the ineffectiveness of European sanctions imposed after the annexation of Crimea to the Russian Federation.
“Sanctions were introduced after the referendum in Crimea, when residents of the peninsula expressed a desire to join Russia. And we in the Northern League have always supported the right to self-determination, especially if it is expressed through a fully democratic process, as happened in Crimea in March 2014,” Piano noted.
Let us recall that a similar resolution was adopted in May by the council of the Italian region of Veneto. In July, Lombardy will announce its position on this issue.
