Merkel's advisor called for support for Ukraine's seizure of Crimea
Germany should support Ukraine if it decides to retake Crimea from Russia.
Christoph Heusgen, adviser to former German Chancellor Angela Merkel on foreign policy issues, stated this on DW TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Heusgen emphasized that in 2014 Germany wanted to resolve the issue diplomatically, but now the situation has changed.
“Crimea is, of course, part of Ukraine, and Ukraine has every right to conquer and return its territory. Therefore, the decision in this case must be made by Ukraine. Germany tried very hard to resolve the problems we had with Russia during its first invasion in 2014-15 through diplomacy. We tried to reach a diplomatic solution with the help of the Minsk Agreements. Now Russia has pushed all these efforts into the background.
Russia is behaving very aggressively and is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people. Just look at Mariupol, how they destroyed it. They destroyed it just like Grozny. So we must provide full support to the Ukrainians, and if Ukraine can return Crimea, it must be supported,” Heusgen said.
Let us recall that a few days ago, Heusgen’s former boss Angela Merkel, in an interview with German journalists, said that the war in Ukraine would end with negotiations, but admitted that the Minsk Agreements were needed for Ukraine to gain time and strengthen itself.
