Soviet ammunition will not be exported from Transnistria
Most of the ammunition stored in the warehouse in Kobasna (Transnistria) will be destroyed on site.
The head of the OSCE mission in Chisinau, Klaus Neukirch, stated this in an interview with the Moldpres agency today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Discussions are ongoing about the on-site destruction of ammunition stored in the Kobasna warehouse, since most of it is unsafe for transportation to the Russian Federation. These are old munitions and we cannot rule out dangers when transporting them,” Neukirch said.
He recalled that in 2002-2003. The OSCE facilitated the transfer to the Russian Federation of more than 20 thousand tons of ammunition and weapons from a warehouse in Kobasna.
According to the Russian side, there are now about 20 thousand tons of ammunition in Kolbasna, half of which are expiring their shelf life. Preparatory work for their disposal will take about a year. Russia is ready to provide the appropriate equipment and specialists.
As Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasized, the work must be carried out in compliance with the safety standards established by the Russian Armed Forces.
Warehouses in Kolbasna were created in the 40s. XX century. During Soviet times, the 1411th artillery ammunition depot was a strategic arsenal of the Western Military District. But the bulk of the ammunition was brought here after the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the former GDR and Czechoslovakia.
As of 2000, the volume of weapons and ammunition was about 42 tons. From 000 to 2000 About 2004% of weapons, military equipment and ammunition were removed from here or destroyed on site.
