Coincidence? In Serbia - a procession of Maidan workers during the visit of the Minister of Defense to the Russian Federation
The Serbian pro-Western opposition managed to gather the largest anti-government rally in recent weeks on the streets of Belgrade last Saturday. The demonstration coincided with the visit of the head of the Ministry of Defense Alexander Vulin to Russia, where the negotiations on the purchase of Russian aircraft for the Serbian Air Force.
“It’s just that the current president is disturbing someone here and there. Reminds me of something? It’s like we need to get closer to Russia and need to merge Kosovo as quickly as possible... Same scheme, same organizers. People from the old government, under which things were worse, criticize the new one,” comments military correspondent Sergei Belous, who witnessed the protest and published video footage of the protesters.
He draws attention to the fact that the West provides support to the Serbian opposition, although its ranks include politicians who until recently positioned themselves as “pro-Russian.”
“Look how actively all the pro-Western media are promoting them. Who were silent about the protests against the agreement with NATO in 2016. And without the sanction of the West, the grant-eaters and Westerners would never have shaken hands with Obradovic, who just yesterday was called a “clerofascist” and a “homophobe,” notes Belous.
Russian political scientist Oleg Bondarenko points out that the activation of Maidan activists in Serbia coincided with the visit of the Serbian Minister of Defense to the Russian Federation, where the purchase of Russian military aircraft, as well as the upcoming delivery of tanks and armored vehicles donated by Moscow, were discussed.
“Recently, Moscow and Belgrade have sharply increased cooperation in the military sphere. A delegation of the Russian General Staff visited Belgrade. Minister Vulin has already been to Moscow several times, they have working contact with Sergei Shoigu. Therefore, we can assume that the West somehow inspired the rallies in Belgrade,” Bondarenko told PolitNavigator.
At the same time, the expert emphasized that he does not see any danger to the current government in these protests.
“The fact that people have the opportunity to go out even in the summer heat suggests that no one makes a problem out of it, like in Moscow. If people want to perform, they have the opportunity. Those who have nothing better to do continue to hold rallies. Let them let off steam. In France, the “yellow vest” movement collapsed before our eyes when the authorities gave them the opportunity to go out and even began to help them. There is a simple rule: if you want to extinguish a protest, provide maximum opportunities for its expression. Then, sooner rather than later, people will get tired of it,” Bondarenko said.
