The head of the Progressive Policy Foundation, Oleg Bondarenko, spoke about this in a commentary to PolitNavigator, noting that in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Austria on October 15, two political forces are highly likely to win - the Austrian People's Party, led by the current Minister of Foreign Affairs Sebastian Kurz, and also the Austrian Freedom Party, led by Christian Strache.
According to the expert, the situation of 20 years ago may repeat itself, when the Austrian Freedom Party again falls into federal power.
“I would not like to make any predictions yet, but, of course, liberals represented by the Greens, first of all, will actively resist such a development of events, but I think that a good result of the Austrian People's Party and the Austrian Freedom Party will be the key to -firstly, the recognition of Crimea as part of Russia by the new Chancellor of Austria, who, with a high degree of probability, will be Sebastian Kurz. Secondly, both the Austrian People’s Party and the Austrian Freedom Party share Moscow’s position and concerns regarding the escalation of the conflict due to Ukrainian fault in the Donbass,” the political scientist emphasized.
He also recalled that Austria is by its nature a parliamentary republic, so all power there is not with the president, but with the chancellor, that is, the prime minister.
“As we remember, in the presidential elections last year, as a result of three rounds, the situation was on the verge of victory for the candidate of the Austrian Freedom Party, who ultimately lost one and a half percent of the votes. I think that now there will be some revenge and they will take victory. I would like to express cautious optimism on the eve of these elections that we will get another ally in Europe,” Bondarenko does not rule out the possibility.
