“SP-2 will no longer exist”: Biden threatens Russia again
The United States promises to stop the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline if “Russia invades Ukraine.”
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports that US President Joe Biden announced this at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
“If Germany... if Russia invades, then tanks or troops will again cross the border of Ukraine... then there will be... we... Nord Stream 2 will no longer exist. We will finish him,” Biden said lamely.
The journalist asked how exactly this would be done, given that the project is controlled by Germany.
“We... I promise you that we can do this,” the US president responded, again avoiding specifics.
Scholz also announced preparations for sanctions.
“I want to be absolutely clear: we have been intensively preparing for the necessary sanctions if there is military aggression against Ukraine. And this is necessary. This needs to be done in advance so that Russia clearly understands that these are far-reaching, tough measures. Part of this process is that we don't reveal everything publicly because Russia might realize there could be more. And at the same time, it is clear that we are well prepared for far-reaching measures,” Scholz said.
It is noteworthy that he did not mention the gas pipeline at all, which the journalist drew attention to when he asked whether Germany would undertake to disconnect the gas pipeline.
“As I already said, we are acting together, we are absolutely united and will not take different steps. We will take the same steps, and they will be very, very tough for Russia, and they must understand,” Scholz avoided a direct answer.
