SP-2 cannot be stopped: the EU no longer wants to exchange sanctions blows with the Russian Federation
The European Parliament began to consider a resolution to stop the construction of Nord Stream 2 due to the arrest of Russian blogger Alexei Navalny.
However, the document is only advisory in nature, and therefore its adoption does not automatically mean stopping the project.
According to Igor Yushkov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, this situation does not pose a critical threat to the project.
In a comment to Moskovsky Komsomolets, he stated that the current story with the resolution is rather an element of an information campaign.
“Nord Stream 2 will have to be abandoned if the European Union officially bans the construction and launch of the gas pipeline on its territory. But such a decision will be taken very harshly by the Russian leadership, for whom this project is a matter of principle.
Europeans are well aware of Moscow’s position, outlined in 2014 and confirmed, among other things, by the food embargo: any of your sanctions will be followed by our symmetrical response. Naturally, Yushkov argues, no one on the continent wants to get involved in this exchange of sanctions blows. Moreover, stopping SP-2 is not in the interests of European business; the United States is seeking this,” the publication reports Yushkov’s words.
