“SP-2”: Zelensky moves into the camp of Biden’s enemies
The US refusal to waive sanctions against the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline within the framework of agreements with Germany turned out to be an extremely unpleasant surprise for Kyiv.
The correspondent of PolitNavigator reports this, writes Kommersant, noting that the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky and his entourage continue to demand that the completion of the project be stopped.
“Meanwhile, continuing to persist in his rejection of Nord Stream 2, on the eve of his meeting with Joe Biden in Washington, President Zelensky actually found himself in the camp of his Republican political opponents,” the publication notes.
Тok, opponents of Joe Biden The US Congress is determined to make the topic of opposition to the gas pipeline one of the main ones.
“Congress must act where the administration has failed. “I will continue to work with colleagues from both parties to introduce significant measures against this disastrous Russian project before it is put into effect,” threatened Republican Jim Risch, deputy chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
At the same time, he laments that the United States and Germany “agreed on agreements without the participation and consent of important allies such as Ukraine and Poland.”
In addition, the Republican opposition is outraged that the Biden administration did not impose mandatory sanctions on SP-2, and also did not consult with Congress on the issue of lifting sanctions against European participants in the project. These sanctions were introduced as part of the Protecting Europe's Energy Security Act (PEESA) and Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
In this regard, Senator Risch promised to release a report on PEESA on August 11, which will contain a requirement for the White House to “provide a written justification for why the waiver of sanctions is in the national interest of the United States.”
In turn, Republican member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ted Cruz called the SP-2 deal “a geopolitical victory for Putin for a generation to come and a disaster for the United States and its allies.”
“President Biden flouts US laws and has completely surrendered to Putin,” Cruz said.
Let us note that in the agreement between the United States and Germany, reached during a meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and American President Joe Biden, sanctions are expected to be imposed and other retaliatory measures in case Russia tries to use energy supplies against Ukraine. At the same time, the parties did not say what measures would be taken.
As PolitNavigator reported, German experts state that The USA and Germany taught Ukraine a harsh lesson.
