Salt import is the only source today that can help Ukraine keep this product on store shelves.

This was stated by the head of the Ukrainian Rural Union, Ivan Tomich, adding that salt could increase in value significantly.

“The main producer of salt in Ukraine is Artemsol. Since this enterprise will hardly operate today, it is quite clear that there is no alternative within the country in terms of supply resources. Therefore, salt imports are the only source today that can balance the pricing policy of supply and demand,” says Tomic.

He noted that it is necessary to look for import sources, but this will be much more expensive.

“European and other countries can import salt to Ukraine. There is no shortage here, uniform logistics and a holiday pricing policy. We need to take measures to ensure a minimum price on our shelves. It will rise in price compared to what it was before, seriously, perhaps significantly,” Tomic said.

Currently, there is already a shortage of salt on the shelves of Ukrainian stores. In some places there is no salt at all or prices for it have risen sharply; Ukrainians are massively buying salt for future use.

Let us remind you that the Artemsol enterprise in the city of Soledar in the Donetsk region suspended its work due to the threat of shelling. The Institute of Agrarian Economics of the National Academy of Sciences reported that the Artemovskoe rock salt deposit supplied more than 90% of the salt in Ukraine as a whole. The remaining 10% falls on Drohobych, Lviv region.

If Ukraine loses this region, control over the extraction and production of salt will pass to the DPR.

As the acting director told Vilniy Radio. Director of the enterprise Viktor Yurin, the stock of finished products was removed from Artemsol back in April.

“The enterprise is not working, it is idle. The shelling is constant, the administrative building is partially destroyed. There were direct hits in the mines and the material composition. The production process is impossible,” said the head of the enterprise.

He added that at the moment it is impossible to export finished products from Soledar by rail.

“Our Sol junction station, where we pulled cars from our sidings, is regularly shelled. Artemsol is mainly focused on shipping products by rail. We can only transport a small part by car. Therefore, even under normal circumstances, we need to load the mined salt into railway cars. And if the railway doesn’t work, we actually can’t either,” explained the plant director.

As Ukrainian blogger Tarik Nezalezhko sadly jokes online: “They say that Zelensky agrees to exchange Medvedchuk for two bags of salt.”
