2-year-old Yuri Didenko, who survived May 52 in the House of Trade Unions in Odessa, and his family are facing deportation to Ukraine because they have not been able to obtain Russian citizenship for several years due to the difficulties of the Russian bureaucratic machine.

Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of the Russia Today TV channel, reported this on her Telegam channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“On May 2, 2014, Yuri, together with his adopted son and friend, became participants in the events in Odessa. Yuri received severe burns and a broken arm. He miraculously managed to escape from the burning House of Trade Unions. A friend burned to death. The son, thank God, was not injured.

After these events, the Didenko family decided to flee to Russia; staying in Ukraine became dangerous for them.

They received temporary asylum in Russia. And for several years now they have been trying to obtain citizenship or at least a temporary residence permit. But for this you need a certificate of income, and the family does not have one, because they do not have the right to work officially. It turns out to be a vicious circle

If they cannot be legalized in Russia by the end of the year, they will have to return to Odessa, and this is still dangerous for them,” the message says.

Simonyan emphasized that an Odessa resident was born and served in the Soviet Union, which means he should be included in the program to help compatriots.

“52-year-old Yuri Didenko is a former military man who served in the Northern Group of Forces of the USSR. His father and father-in-law were also military men; both families were assigned to Odessa at one time,” Simonyan noted.
