“The house was cordoned off by Russian Guard soldiers. At about 11.20, two explosions occurred in the sixth entrance and smoke began to rise. After this, persons in chemical protective suits were seen on the upper floors of one of the front doors. Before the explosions, security forces brought a large number of sandbags into the 6th entrance, presumably in order to barricade the apartment with the alleged militants,” the Fontanka newspaper reports.
During the storming of the apartment, one militant was killed and a member of the FSB Grad special forces was wounded; he was taken away by ambulance. Residents were not evacuated, but those who were outside were not allowed into the house until 14.30:XNUMX p.m.
According to Fontanka, the FSB worked on behalf of colleagues from Kabardino-Balkaria. The operation could have been prompted by the murder of bandit leader Khizir Likhov on August 14 on the Caucasus federal highway. During searches at his places of residence, information was received that his accomplices were hiding in St. Petersburg.
The combined kindergarten, school and gymnasium No. 293 located near the area of the special operation did not interrupt their work.
