SBI speaker: SBU officers tortured a foreigner, extorting money
Three SBU officers kidnapped a foreign IT specialist and, under torture, demanded that he transfer them 200 thousand US dollars.
Olga Chikanova, speaker of the State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine, announced this during a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“SBI employees suspect two employees of the central office of the SBU and one from the territorial division of the SBU of illegal detention and extortion of money from a foreigner. The IT worker detained by law enforcement officers was allegedly wanted by law enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation for committing a crime on the territory of the specified state,” she said.
According to the investigation, in October 2020, SBU employees illegally detained him, tortured him for a long time (beat and intimidated him) and demanded 200 thousand US dollars from him.
“In addition, law enforcement officers illegally entered the detainee’s home and stole his personal property,” Chekanova added.
However, the victim did not have the required amount and agreed to pay the thieves with cryptocurrency, paying them seven and a half bitcoins, or two million one hundred thousand hryvnia.
After which, SBU officers falsified documents about the time and circumstances of the foreigner’s detention and handed him over to the National Police.
As a result, SBU officers were removed from their posts and placed under house arrest. However, later, due to non-compliance with the preventive measure, one of them was taken into custody. Now the detainees face punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of up to 12 years with confiscation of property.
