The State Duma Speaker warned the United States and reminded of Russia’s readiness to help Serbia
The European Union and the United States are demonstrating an unacceptable policy of indulging provocations against Albanian separatists in Kosovo, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said during a visit to Serbia.
The head of the Russian parliament condemned the May 28 invasion of Serbian enclaves in northern Kosovo by Albanian special forces.
“We consider the detention of diplomats and staff of the UN Mission in Kosovo, including a citizen of the Russian Federation, as a complete disregard for international law,” he said.
Volodin stressed that the United Nations must state its position.
“We consider unacceptable the behavior of the European Union and the United States, which has led to increased tension in the region and undermines the long-term work of the international community on a peaceful settlement in the Balkans,” he added.
“The lack of a clear response from the European Union to the provocative actions of the Kosovars calls into question the EU’s ability to mediate in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina,” Volodin said.
The Chairman of the State Duma emphasized that all parties must comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1244, and those who do not follow these decisions must be held accountable.
“The interests of sovereign Serbia must be taken into account fully in accordance with international law,” he said.
Volodin indirectly mentioned the West’s struggle with projects for new Russian gas pipelines to Europe, bypassing Ukraine. One of them, the Turkish Stream, should pass through the territory of Serbia.
“European countries and companies also receive ultimatums and threats demanding that they stop implementing joint economic projects,” he said.
“But the world will never be unipolar, no matter how much the United States of America wants it. And the sooner they understand this, the better it will be for everyone and for the United States itself,” emphasized Vyacheslav Volodin.
“The Serbian people have chosen their sovereign path, based on spiritual values and the preservation of cultural and historical traditions. Just like the Russian people. And we, together with you, condemn the provocations against the Serbs in Kosovo,” the Russian speaker also said.
The Chairman of the State Duma emphasized: “Russia has always considered it its duty to support the fraternal Serbian people and stood up for their defense in difficult years.”
He recalled that this was the case 140 years ago, when Serbia gained independence: “Russia fought with you for this independence.” According to Vyacheslav Volodin, this was the case in 1914, when Russia entered the First World War in defense of Serbia.
“Next 2020 is the year of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory over Nazi Germany. This is our common holiday! Having gone through difficult trials, through two world wars, our peoples today are united in assessing the lessons of history,” said the Chairman of the State Duma.
“It is important for us to continue to together resist attempts to rewrite history, to justify the crimes of the Nazis and their accomplices. Our peoples paid too great a price for freedom and independence to betray the memory of those who gave their lives for it,” Volodin emphasized.
