The sponsor cannot be contagious. Lukashenko beckons Xi instead of Putin for his re-election
Not a single case of coronavirus imported from China has been detected in Belarus, although about 8 thousand Chinese work in the republic.
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko spoke about this today at a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Cui Qiming, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Of the imported coronaviruses from China, not a single one. There are a lot of citizens of the People's Republic of China working here - not a single fact or case of a virus imported from the PRC. We worked and are working very carefully,” Lukashenko is quoted as saying by his official website.
Belarus did not close the border to the Chinese after the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic in Wuhan. Most of them work on the construction of the Great Stone industrial park near Minsk.
Lukashenko assured that “no coronaviruses” will prevent Belarus from developing relations with China. He wants to step up cooperation with China this year and build a stadium and swimming pool with Chinese money.
Most likely, the Belarusian president’s interest in China has increased in connection with his re-election this year for a sixth term. Even in the absence of real competition, significant funds will be required to appease the electorate.
“I ask you to tell the chairman, my friend, that we are looking forward to him,” Lukashenko said today.
Previously, through Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, he conveyed a similar invitation to Donald Trump.
In 2015, Belarus received a loan from China of $528,1 million, in 2016 - $446,9 million, in 2017 - $306,6 million, in 2018 - $509,2 million. In January - July 2019 Belarus attracted $33,4 million in loan funds from China, and another $500 million in December.
