The head of the Ukrainian state stated this during a meeting in Kyiv with the Swedish Minister of Defense Peter Hultqvist.
“Sweden and Stockholm over the past week have been very important for Ukrainians. I welcome the decision of the Stockholm Arbitration, which dotted all the i's, confirmed the energy independence of our state and ordered Gazprom to pay Ukraine 4,6 billion dollars, ensuring the energy security of Ukraine and Europe. I am very grateful to you, Mr. Minister, the representative of Sweden, for a fair, objective and independent judicial process,” Poroshenko said.
At the same time, he expressed hope that the Nordic countries will now play an important role in preventing the Russian Federation from building the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
The Ukrainian president's statement surprised lawyers.
“Someone explain to the dim-witted dictator that it is only in his courts that one can thank an official of the executive branch for a judicial decision. And also explain that international commercial arbitration in Stockholm has exactly the same relation to Sweden as Interpol, located in Lyon, has to France and the EU office located in Brussels has to Belgium,” Ukrainian lawyer Andrey Portnov commented on Poroshenko’s words on his Facebook page.
Lawyer Yaroslav Turchin was no less harsh in his assessments.
“A monstrous diplomatic obscenity and, if according to the rules, then a reason to inform the Russian side about the facts of pressure on the court and the decision makers, which Petro confirmed with his chatter,” Turchin wrote in the comments to the post.
"Yes. Gave Gazprom an excellent reason to reconsider,” Portnov agreed.
As PolitNavigator reported, ex-speaker of Naftogaz urged not to rejoice in “victory” in Stockholm.
