Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this today, opening a meeting of the Security Council dedicated to regional policy.

“The gross regional product has increased significantly: from 1998 to 2014 it grew 25 times – from 2,2 to 58,7 trillion rubles,” Putin said.

The President believes that more effective and targeted federal and regional target programs have allowed the regions to solve economic and social problems.

“The demographic situation has noticeably improved. Since 2009, the population has begun to increase, and the life expectancy of our people has increased. Here’s an example: the life expectancy of Russians in 1995 was 64 years, and in 2015 it was already 71 years. The infant mortality rate decreased from 18 per 1 thousand people in 1994 to 6,5 in 2015,” Putin said.
