The US anti-Russian campaign in Europe has achieved the opposite effect
The anti-Russian campaign launched by the United States and its “Young European” satellites, which asserted the threat of increasing Russian influence after the launch of Nord Stream 2, had the opposite effect.
Key EU countries, on the contrary, perceived the Americans’ actions as interference in European affairs. Chairman of the Bundestag Committee on Economics and Energy Klaus Ernst stated this during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the politician, thanks to the fact that Germany did not agree to US demands to stop construction of the gas pipeline, the European Union retained its sovereignty.
“I want to clearly emphasize that Nord Stream 2 has a significance that goes far beyond the economic situation, because this, from both the German and European sides, emphasizes or lets us know that we were able to implement the project despite resistance from different sides.
This project is now apparently completed or almost completed, despite the fact that US resistance was very strong and was associated with a threat to European sovereignty. Because it is a threat to European sovereignty if the US tells Europe or Germany how to act in energy policy. That is, to indicate.
This position has led to the fact that in Germany the view on this issue has changed in such a way that we hear critical voices directed towards America. I am very glad to observe the current discourse that, apparently, Europe will not pay the United States anything for this process,” Ernst said.
