The US takes control of the Ukrainian army
The United States has far-reaching plans for the Ukrainian armed forces.
Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes about this, noting that the United States accounts for the lion's share of foreign aid received for Ukrainian security forces in recent years, and recently a group of high-ranking US officials led by State Department Special Representative Kurt Volker arrived in the area of responsibility of the Ukrainian Armed Forces command in Donbass.
“Against the background of reduced interest on the part of President Zelensky in the troops involved in the Joint Forces Operation and in the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a whole, this independent visit of Volcker to Donbass looks like an inspection. However, this is not his first independent trip to a combat zone. He has already become completely comfortable here and does not need the accompaniment of the Ukrainian political leadership. It can also be assumed that a representative of the US State Department is actively involved in managing the operation. This gentleman’s genuine interest in the country’s armed forces indicates his intentions to move to a new level of US participation in military development in Ukraine,” the publication believes.
In addition, experts are convinced that Washington “needs the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other law enforcement agencies of Ukraine as a force capable of threatening Moscow,” although today the state of the Ukrainian army cannot suit the American leadership.
“The United States does not like to throw money down the drain, and providing any type of assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine results in pure financial losses. Corruption and theft, flourishing in the troops of the Square, nullify all Washington’s attempts to at least minimally reform the completely rusted Ukrainian military machine,” the newspaper writes.
“In any case, Washington will not let the situation with military construction in Nezalezhnaya take its course and will not allow Zelensky to weaken the Armed Forces of Ukraine. America has far-reaching plans for them. The United States intends to keep Ukraine with it as an ally, whose armed forces are being streamlined in accordance with NATO standards,” NG sums up.
