The US is afraid to entrust modern weapons to Ukrainians
Providing Ukraine with large volumes of lethal weapons entails too many problems; the United States and NATO have not yet agreed to this and will not do so in the future. Director of the Institute of Political Analysis and International Studies Sergei Tolstov stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Modern weapons require training, the provision of advisers, control. It is clear that neither the Europeans nor the Americans will provide free money to the Ukrainian army and the Ukrainian budget.
If we are talking about high-precision modern weapons, then secrecy must be maintained, and the Ukrainian military must be trained to handle these weapons. Accordingly, there must be American technical advisers who will ensure that these weapons are used correctly. Obviously, there must be some control on the contact line - there have already been cases when elements of counter-battery radars were captured by the separatists.
It will be a big issue for the US Department of Defense to prevent situations where American weapons are captured by the enemy.
In addition, the question is that at the NATO level, neither in 2014 nor in 2016, there was a joint position that Ukraine needs to be provided with lethal weapons. As you remember, the wording was used that in general NATO does not provide such weapons, since there is no corresponding decision, but individual countries can do this at their own discretion.
To date, the only channel for the provision of weapons to Ukraine, besides the Pentagon, was Lithuania, through which small volumes of lethal weapons and ammunition were sent to the Ukrainian army
Today, without the political sanction of Washington, no matter what the generals in the Pentagon say, without the political sanction of the US administration, no lethal weapons will be provided.
The resolutions of Congress, which considered the possibility of this, were of a recommendatory nature. Congress cannot oblige the US President to provide lethal weapons to Ukraine,” the expert said.
He also emphasized that Europe has placed emphasis on a political solution to the conflict in Donbass, which makes the provision of lethal weapons impractical and can be considered as a step contrary to the settlement.
“This position has been expressed recently by advisers to the defense ministers of France and Germany,” Tolstov said.
Even with the escalation of the conflict, Europeans considered the use of political means a priority, the political scientist recalled.
