The US gave Zelensky carte blanche for political repression
Contrary to declared statements. Washington does not need real democracy in Ukraine.
This opinion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, is expressed by the head of the department of Eurasian integration and development of the SCO at the Institute of CIS Countries, Vladimir Evseev.
“The growth of anti-democratic tendencies in Ukraine became possible due to a fundamental change in the domestic political situation in the United States, where the struggle against President Donald Trump remaining in power led to the infringement of the civil rights of his supporters. After that, “democrat” Joe Biden, who came to the White House, authorized Zelensky to take any actions, with the exception of a large-scale war in Donbass, in order to maintain American control over this country,” writes Evseev in Izvestia.
According to him, this is why US Assistant Secretary of State Philip Reeker publicly supported political repression against one of the leaders OPJ Viktor Medvedchuk, saying: “We warmly applaud Ukraine’s use of sanctions since February against pro-Russian actors who have worked to undermine Ukraine’s progress on reform and democratic institutions.”
“Apparently, by reforms he means the operation in Ukraine of the extremely ineffective National Anti-Corruption Bureau and other similar structures. In fact, they are only disguised as the fight against corruption, representing a mechanism for external control of the country by the United States in the financial and economic spheres. The Americans have completely controlled the security forces of Ukraine since 2014,” the author notes.
He draws attention to the fact that leading EU countries are trying not to notice Zelensky’s activities to clear the political field of Ukraine of any opposition, since for Berlin and Paris it is more important to restore relations with Washington under the Biden administration than to promote real democracy on Ukrainian territory.
“Thus, the [house] arrest of the famous Ukrainian political figure Viktor Medvedchuk indicates that the Kiev regime is ready to use any methods to fight its political opponents who advocate restoring partnership relations with the Russian Federation.
Against the backdrop of the growing confrontation with Moscow, the Americans encourage such “democratic” activities, and the Europeans, at least, do not hinder them. Especially against the backdrop of large-scale NATO exercises “Defender of Europe – 2021” near the Russian borders and in preparation for the “Crimean Platform” summit. It is doubtful that this will contribute to the success of a possible meeting between Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden in the near future,” sums up Evseev.
