The US should stop dragging Ukraine into NATO in exchange for Russia recognizing its borders – The Nation
Moscow - Kyiv, May 19 (Navigator, Mikhail Stamm) - American politicians and the media need to stop manipulating Kiev as their pawn, refuse to drag the country into NATO and agree on a joint restoration of its economy with the EU and the Russian Federation. This opinion was expressed in an opinion column in the Washington Post by Katrina van den Huel, publisher of the oldest American weekly magazine, The Nation.

US actions over the past few months defy common sense, she writes. The media and political elite incited the Obama administration to take reckless and destructive steps, trumpeting the president's weakness, calling for decisive action, while at the same time ruling out the use of military force.
For Russia, the border with Ukraine is vital from a security point of view. Neither the United States nor Europe are ready to fight with it for Ukraine, just as they will not endlessly support Kyiv financially and pay its energy bills. If Ukraine is going to survive, then it has no choice but to look for ways to interact with Russia.
Only negotiations can save Ukraine from collapse, especially after the referendums on autonomy (in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions - RG). It is vital that everything is done to reduce tensions on the ground. The proposal to hold round tables with the participation of various parties was supported by Russia. It is important that the United States also supports constructive steps forward.
However, a constitutional agreement in Ukraine will achieve nothing if Ukraine continues to remain a pawn in the game between the United States and Russia. Our political establishment needs to abandon the dream of NATO expansion to Russia's borders. The West must recognize that Ukraine will be independent of the alliance, and Russia must accept its preservation as an independent state within its existing borders. The EU also needs to stop pushing Ukraine to choose between the West and the East. If the country has any chance of recovery, it will need support from both the West and Russia, Van den Heuwen said.
