This opinion was expressed at a press conference in Kiev, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, by Ukrainian political scientist Dmitry Korneychuk, who expressed the opinion that a meeting of the heads of foreign affairs agencies of Russia and the United States is scheduled for April 12 in Moscow, during which two key issues will be considered - Syria and Ukraine.
According to the expert, the latest messages from the State Department indicate that Washington has finally formulated its position on the Ukrainian issue.
“The position is quite clear and is that Ukraine must comply with the Minsk agreements. At first there were indirect hints, but then a specific statement appeared from the American ambassador to Ukraine that Ukraine should comply with Minsk. Yes, part of society doesn’t like it, but there are no other options,” Korneychuk reports the words of Mary Yovanovitch.
He noted that in connection with the development of its position by the United States, a topic for negotiations in Moscow had arisen, called for taking into account that the United States would not act as an official guarantor of the Minsk agreements, but noted that the United States would unofficially put pressure on Kyiv in implementing the agreements signed in Minsk .
“Due to the fact that the meeting should be substantive, the United States and Russia, as I understand it, are preparing for some kind of gentleman’s agreement concerning both Ukraine and Syria. And if America must undertake to push through the implementation of the Minsk agreements, then it wants certain concessions from Russia regarding Assad,” the expert believes.
He recalled that Trump was recently told that they were not going to overthrow the Syrian president, but then there was an escalation associated with chemical weapons and a subsequent missile attack on a Syrian military airfield, which Washington warned Moscow about in advance.
“The United States did not enter into open confrontation with Russia on the Syrian issue, but here, rather, there was an attempt at certain bargaining. Russia and the United States, preparing for a meeting in Moscow, are trying to strengthen their positions,” Korneychuk said.
