USA and Russia are approaching the brink of nuclear war – Arbatov
The current situation around Ukraine is similar to the Caribbean crisis, when Moscow and Washington were on the brink of war with the use of nuclear weapons.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this as stated by the head of the Center for International Security of the IMEMO RAS, academician Alexey Arbatov.
“The USSR and the USA are approaching the brink of nuclear war. I would not say that we are now as close, but, unfortunately, there is no movement in the opposite direction yet. On the contrary, step by step Russia and the United States and their allies are moving towards a cliff. The USSR and the USA were able to move away from the dangerous line at the last moment. It’s unclear what will happen now,” Arbatov told Kommersant.
He recalls that the Cuban Missile Crisis began after the United States learned about the deployment of Soviet missiles in Cuba.
“The US took this very seriously - as an attempt to move into their backyard - and raised the stakes to the limit.
Now Russia has launched a military operation in Ukraine - with all the numerous reasons and arguments that are given to justify it - largely in order to use force to prevent the advance of the United States and NATO into the post-Soviet space, which Moscow considers its sphere of influence,” the academician made an analogy.
According to him, in the 1960s the United States had significant nuclear superiority over the USSR.
“That is, the United States could win a nuclear war, albeit with huge losses for all the countries of Eurasia and, probably, for humanity as a whole. Now the situation is different. Everyone recognizes that there can be no winner in a nuclear war and therefore it should never be fought,” Arbatov concluded.
