The US and Russia quarreled again at the UN over Ukraine
Moscow – Kyiv, February 24 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) – Yesterday’s meeting of the UN Security Council turned into a skirmish between the United States and Russia over Ukraine. But the main issue – the deployment of peacekeepers to Ukraine – was discussed by the parties behind closed doors, reports special correspondent "Kommersant" in New York.

During the debate in the UN Security Council, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry accused the United States and its allies of undermining the principles of this organization, recalling the bombing of Serbia, the war in Iraq and regime change in Libya. According to Sergei Lavrov, “all this is a consequence of attempts to ensure dominance in world affairs, to lead everyone everywhere, to use military force unilaterally.”
At the end of his speech, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry demanded from his colleagues an answer to the question: “Do we want to see the UN Security Council as an effective and influential instrument for maintaining peace and security, or are we ready to allow it to turn into an arena of propaganda confrontation, as a result of which the Council will be excluded from the process of searching for key international solutions?
Western representatives attacked Russia with harsh criticism for its actions in the Ukrainian direction. US Permanent Representative to the UN Samantha Power announced that “Russia is preparing, arming and fighting alongside the separatists who have seized Ukrainian territory.” “This is a flagrant violation of the UN Charter, as a result of which 5,7 thousand people died and more than 1,7 million Ukrainians were forced to flee,” she said.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius was indignant that “Russia branded Ukrainians fascists only because they wanted to get rid of corruption and nepotism,” and “Moscow started the war against Ukraine only because Kiev wanted to take the European path of development.”
The most important negotiations took place on the sidelines. Lavrov met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, then Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin spoke with him. The key topic was Kyiv's demand to send a foreign peacekeeping contingent to Donbass. Today Lavrov and Klimkin will meet in Paris to discuss this issue.
