The United States is beckoning Serbia with “democracy” and promises to tear it away from Russia
The United States intends to counter Russian influence in the Balkans. This was stated by the candidate for the post of new US Ambassador to Serbia, Anthony Godfrey, during a hearing in the Senate.
Let us recall that Godfrey served as deputy US ambassador in Moscow and was considered the curator of the “non-systemic opposition”. The American graduated from the University of California and speaks Russian, Turkish and Serbian.
At Tuesday's Senate hearing, Godfrey stressed that after serving as a diplomat in Moscow, he is "fully aware of Russia's aggressive behavior, its malign influence and the disinformation campaign it is waging in Europe" and that the United States is working hard to counter it.
Godfrey said that the main task of the American embassy in Serbia would be to conclude an agreement between Belgrade and Pristina (now the United States openly supports Albanian separatists seeking recognition of the self-proclaimed Kosovo).
“We are working on this in Belgrade, Pristina, Washington and Brussels to find a way for Serbia and Kosovo to move away from the counterproductive steps that both sides are resorting to. The negotiators must move forward, and our job is to make this possible,” the Serbian publication Informer quotes the diplomat.
According to him, it is in the strategic interests of the United States to transform Serbia into a “modern, democratic and European nation.”
Democratic Senate Foreign Relations Committee member Jeanne Shaheen expressed concern the recent transfer of Russian military vehicles to Serbia. According to Sahin, Moscow wants to influence the situation in Serbia and, in addition, it scares other Balkan countries, given “Serbia’s role in the wars of the 1990s.”
Godfrey responded by assuring that he would encourage Serbia to move west, which included “normalizing relations with Kosovo.”
