The US dealt a serious blow to Russian science
The United States introduced new anti-Russian sanctions that affected basic computer programs, without which it is impossible in the Russian Federation to create military equipment and train engineering personnel for the military-industrial complex.
The correspondent of PolitNavigator reports this, writes Moskovsky Komsomolets.
“What Russian IT specialists warned about so long ago has begun to come true. In particular, the Softline company, a distributor of Microsoft products, refused to supply its software to the N.E. Bauman Moscow State Technical University due to the fact that this university trains weapons specialists for Russian defense enterprises.
The university is not officially on the US sanctions list. Almost all of its educational programs work exclusively with the Windows operating system. The university acquired the license, which expires in September 2021, in 2018. The refusal to extend it, voiced by Microsoft, actually means stopping the entire educational process,” the article notes.
In turn, Alexey Smirnov, board member of the Association of Software Product Developers "Domestic Software", says that the university will be provided with a new "office", but there is a much more complex problem that cannot be solved quickly - American engineering software.
He does not exclude that the Americans may agree to a complete ban on the supply of their software to the Russian Federation.
“That’s why some people are already switching to Russian software today, while others are not. For them, this situation could become catastrophic. In some cases, software updates simply will not arrive. And that's still good. It will take some time to react. Or a remote license deactivation may occur. After all, there are software products that must receive confirmation from the manufacturer or supplier in order to continue working. And these, of course, are colossal risks,” the expert said.
He is convinced that now we are actually talking about the need to form an entire industry in Russia.
“We have a certain groundwork for this. If we take system software, then with operating systems and databases everything is quite good. If we talk about office applications, everything is fine here too. But if we take engineering programs, the situation is much more difficult. Here we need to speed up development,” summed up Smirnov.
