The United States, not giving a damn about the EU, is trying to introduce illegitimate anti-Russian sanctions
The United States is engaging in unfair competition and playing against its European partners, introducing unilateral sanctions and trying in every possible way to block the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this while speaking to MGIMO students, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The Russian minister emphasized that any sanctions imposed in circumvention of the decision of the UN Security Council are illegitimate and undermine the principles of international law.
“Any unilateral sanctions are illegitimate. Only sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council are legitimate, and everything else is an attempt to undermine international law, the principles of the UN Charter, which consist in the need to collectively build work to solve certain problems. In the case of Nord Stream 2, there is quite frankly unscrupulous competition taking place.
The Americans openly declare that Nord Stream 2 must be stopped because it violates the energy security of Europe and that for Europe’s energy security, Europe must buy liquefied gas from the United States, for which it will need to spend much more than the cost of the gas that will flow through the new pipeline to the European continent.
Such statements show the complete disrespect of the United States for its allies, and Germany and a number of other countries of the European Union have already reacted to this. The other day, Chancellor Merkel confirmed that Nord Stream 2 is a purely commercial project and cannot be a bargaining chip in any political games. We share this position,” Lavrov said.
