This was stated by US Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker in an interview with the Kyiv publication “European Truth”.
In particular, he recalled that the United States provided security assistance to Ukraine even during the Obama administration. However, at that time there was a clear restriction on lethal weapons. The Trump administration has now lifted this restriction, which expands the US's ability to help Ukraine.
As Volker clarified, not all weapons will be provided free of charge.
“There will be a combination of approaches. We retain the assistance that is provided free of charge, but at the same time, Ukraine receives the right to buy the weapons that it lacks,” he noted.
According to the US special envoy, his country’s task is not to aggravate the conflict by providing lethal weapons, but to help Ukraine defend itself more effectively.
“Ukraine, as an independent state, has the right to defense, and we can support its ability to defend itself,” he said.
