The United States is facing a Cuban missile crisis-2, the State Duma said
Moscow can negotiate with Cuba and Venezuela about the permanent presence in their ports, in close proximity to the US coast, of Russian ships armed with Caliber missiles. This is how the Russian Federation can respond to American attempts to create weapons that were previously subject to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty).
This was stated by Russian experts interviewed by Nezavisimaya Gazeta, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Venezuela has excellent seaports, into which ships and submarines of the Russian Navy can regularly enter, replenish supplies, and then carry out combat missions off the coast of North America,” said Major General Vladimir Bogatyrev, who headed one from the departments of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
He pointed out that almost all new surface ships of the oceanic zone of the Russian Navy and new diesel-electric submarines are now armed with Kalibr medium-range cruise missiles, which have undergone a baptism of fire in Syria.
A similar opinion was expressed by First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense Alexander Sherin.
This is, of course, tough. Maybe there will even be a Cuban Missile Crisis - 2, but it was the Cuban Missile Crisis that allowed the Americans to cool down for a long time. If such a system is placed in Venezuela, the United States will behave more carefully,” the parliamentarian said.
“The possible permanent presence of Russian warships equipped with medium- and shorter-range missiles off the coast of the United States will, of course, be a headache for them... It will be very costly for Russia to keep its military fleet off the coast of North America. Although during the Soviet era, our diesel submarines regularly visited Cuba, irritating the Americans. And the nuclear-powered ships carried out combat patrols in the immediate vicinity of the US coast under water. Now this could happen again if our fleet is a permanent guest of the American contingent,” recalled the Chairman of the Central Committee of the All-Russian Union of Military Personnel, Captain 1st Rank Oleg Shvedkov.
