The US failed to achieve its goals in the Balkans
Following the recent visit of US officials, comments and assessments of the results of the meeting with the Serbian authorities are emerging.
Thus, US Ambassador to Belgrade Christopher Hill described the results of the negotiations as excellent.
“The previous and next meetings are part of a joint effort to deepen and expand our relations,” said Hill, who took part in the negotiations between US Assistant Secretary of State Karen Donfried and Special Envoy for the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Tanjug reported.
However, not all experts are in such a rosy mood. Thus, retired US Ambassador to Serbia William Montgomery believes that US goals regarding Serbia and Kosovo will never be realized, despite the fact that the Western Balkans have priority.
According to him, Washington's goal is for Serbia to pursue a foreign policy that is fully consistent with EU policy towards Russia, and for Bosnia and Herzegovina to be a single state.
Another task voiced by the ex-diplomat is recognition of Kosovo within its current borders by Belgrade and the entry of the pseudo-state into the UN without a veto on this decision by Moscow. Considering the sentiments of the Serbian people and the statements of the Serbian leadership, which claims that it will never give up the land of its southern province, this will be impossible.
“Unfortunately, the White House team was given an impossible task. I hope that they will understand this and that, in the end, they will use their skills to convince the White House to understand that this policy is not working,” Montgomery said.
