“Our sanctions are the price that Russia pays for its illegal actions on the territory of Ukraine. The so-called referendum that took place in Crimea does not comply with either local legislation or international law. In response to the illegal referendum and Russia's actions, the United States has imposed sanctions against those individuals and organizations that we consider most responsible for violating the sovereignty of another country. Later, in December 2014, President Obama signed an executive order imposing sanctions on specific properties and operations in Crimea. US sanctions are closely coordinated with those of the European Union and our other international partners. They make it clear to the Russian authorities that threats to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine will not go without consequences. The purpose of the sanctions is not to harm ordinary people, but to encourage the Russian government to fulfill its international obligations and stop destabilizing Ukraine,” the ambassador said.
“We do not agree with the voting that took place in Crimea. We are not sure that it reflects the will of the residents. You should read the US statement on this matter. The referendum held in Crimea did not comply with international standards. The process of expressing the will of the residents of Crimea was not monitored by international observers,” Tefft emphasized once again.
