Legislators claim that at the beginning of August, the Russian authorities decided to transfer Tu-22M3 bombers and Iskander-M complexes to Crimea, capable in the future of delivering strikes with high-precision R-500 cruise missiles, including those with nuclear warheads. The latter, according to James Inofe, a member of the US Senate Armed Services Committee, is a direct violation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, signed by the USSR in 1987. The missile has a range of 2600 km, while the agreement prohibits the production and testing of ground-based weapons with a range between 500 km and 5500 km.

Let us recall that in Moscow they talked about the violation of the requirements of this treaty by the Americans themselves, clarifying that we are talking about medium and intermediate-range missiles being developed by the United States, used to practice anti-missile interceptions

According to a newspaper source Kommersant at the General Staff, the decision to station a naval missile-carrying air regiment with Tu-22M3 bombers in service at Gvardeyskoye was made, but the process will be finally completed only in 2016 (before this point, a deep modernization of the ground infrastructure of the air base must be carried out). The interlocutor did not comment on plans to deploy Iskander missiles in Crimea, but earlier Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu stated that such complexes could be placed on Russian territory in absolutely any place: “Where we want, we put it there!”

“Equipping the peninsula with the latest types of weapons is one of the priority areas,” a high-ranking General Staff officer told Kommersant yesterday.
