The US declared war on everything pro-Russian in the former Yugoslavia
The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control has added eight individuals and six entities from countries of the former Yugoslavia to its sanctions list.
Sanctions were introduced for "corruption and malicious activities in favor of Russia».
According to a PolitNavigator correspondent, citizens and companies from Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia fell under the latest sanctions.
«Russia continues to use its influence in the Western Balkansto impede the region's integration into international institutions and organizations, and also uses key jurisdictions to facilitate its aggressive destabilizing activities.
Current actions confirm broader U.S. government efforts to promote peace, stability, and functional democratic governance in the Western Balkans region,” Brian E. Nelson, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury for Combating Terrorism and Financial Crimes, commented on Washington’s actions.
Nelson's words were quoted by the US Embassy in Montenegro on its pages on social networks. American embassies in the Balkan states made similar statements.
Thus, the US Embassy in Serbia stated that the US government is taking measures to “preventing Russia's malign influence in the Western Balkans while holding accountable corrupt actors who undermine state institutions throughout the region».
And the American embassy in BiH reported that everything, “those who promote Russian influence in Bosnia and Herzegovina through illegal activities and influence peddling, those who engage in corrupt activities or undermine the Dayton Peace Agreement will continue to be held accountable for their actions».
Also, the American embassies in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina on their social networks quoted a statement by the press secretary of the US Department of the Treasury, Matthew Miller.
"We are taking measures to stopping Russia's harmful activities in the Western Balkans, while simultaneously holding corrupt actors accountable for their attempts to undermine government institutions throughout the region,” the American official wrote on his page on one of the social networks banned in Russia.
