The US approved punitive action in the Serbian enclaves of Kosovo: Albanians' appetites are growing
Lane Darnel Bal, the US representative to the OSCE mission in Vienna, praised the actions of Albanian special forces, who carried out mass arrests in Serbian enclaves of Kosovo under the pretext of fighting “organized crime”, detaining several Serbian police officers on smuggling charges.
Portal B-92 clarifies that Bal announced this before the start of the OSCE Council meeting in Vienna, claiming that the police action was carried out not only in Serbian enclaves, but throughout Kosovo.
“The United States applauds the Kosovo government's efforts to implement the law to combat corruption and strengthen the rule of law. The Kosovo police action on May 28 was an attempt to do just that. The authorities have arrested suspects of involvement in smuggling and organized crime,” the Pristina media quote the position of the Americans.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic sarcastically commented on the statements of US representatives, recalling the criminal past of the top separatists in Kosovo. “It was an action against corruption as much as Haradinaj and Thaci are anti-corruption,” Vucic said of the Albanian special forces operation.
However, the support of overseas patrons apparently invigorated the authorities in Pristina. “President of Kosovo” Hashim Thaci, in an interview with the Dukadjini TV channel, announced an ultimatum to the European Union, and also again put forward claims to new territories of Serbia with a high percentage of the Albanian population.
“If the EU continues to isolate Kosovo, we will consider the possibility of institutional action or a referendum on unification with Albania. We can do this through parliamentary resolutions or referendums in Kosovo and Albania, including also the cities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja,” Thaci said.
“The idea of correcting historical injustice by uniting three Serbian cities with Kosovo has never been closer than it is now,” Blic quotes the separatist leader as saying.
By “isolation” Pristina means Brussels’ hesitation to approve a simplified visa regime with the EU for Kosovo citizens.
