The United States fears an ultra-right coup in Kyiv: Ultimatum to Avakov on Azov
The appeal of American congressmen to Congress to add Azov and related structures to the list of terrorist organizations indicates that the United States wants to rein in the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov and believes that Vladimir Zelensky is not able to resist a possible far-right coup.
Director of the Institute of Policy Analysis and Management Ruslan Bortnik stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“On the one hand, this is a logical line. Let me remind you that earlier, when the United States allocated financial assistance to Ukraine in previous years, there was a note that we were helping all the armed forces of Ukraine, except for Azov. The United States has long and deliberately considered Azov to be an ultra-right or neo-Nazi structure, and taking into account the Jewish lobby, taking into account possible image losses (American weapons could end up in the hands of the ultra-right), the United States has always stipulated that they help the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but in no case will this help cannot reach Azov's hands.
Recently, this dialogue has calmed down and what happened this week indicates the beginning of new complex political processes regarding Ukraine. The motivation of American congressmen goes further than the desire not to finance far-right structures.
The United States associates a future decision in this area, among other things, with complex political processes within the country.
From a tactical point of view, many people in the United States believe that Avakov, who literally defended Azov today, has become very strong, and who says that he influences Azov. Even nominally, “Azov” as a structure of the National Guard is subordinate to the Minister of Internal Affairs, but this is not a nominal influence - real - both political and economic.
Taking into account the fact that right-wing rallies against the Steimeier formula are taking place in Ukraine, taking into account the fact that the right continues to significantly influence the government and could potentially be a risk factor for this government, this decision is perceived as an attempt to weaken the right, perhaps - an attempt to weaken Avakov.
Today they tried to put him before a choice - either support for Azov and, accordingly, loss of confidence in him, loss in the eyes of the Western public, or refusal to support this structure, slow extinction, self-dissolution.
For now, Avakov intends to defend himself, and this story will continue. Let's wait for the official decision.
