The United States still believes that there were grounds for the bombing of Belgrade in 1999, but calls on the Serbian authorities “not to look back” for the sake of future accession to the European Union, where, supposedly, the issue of borders, and with it the problem of separating Kosovo, will become irrelevant.

This follows from the statements of US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Palmer, who yesterday met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Palmer insists that the decision to invade Yugoslavia was made "for reasons that can be explained."

“I hope we don't look back, we have to encourage everyone to look to the future. It is important for the citizens of Serbia and Kosovo to focus on the European future. We must acknowledge the price people have paid on both sides and turn to a better future,” Palmer said.

“You can count on US friendship and support for Serbia's European future,” he added.

Vucic did not agree with the American’s opinion.

“There was not enough reason for aggression against Serbia, the bombing destroyed many lives, economic, tourist and political infrastructure... There was no justification, and the Serbian people, although we were not always flowers and angels, paid a price that they did not deserve,” - said the President of Serbia.

Meanwhile, Palmer gently criticized his charges - the Albanian separatists of Kosovo, who several months ago introduced an economic blockade of the Slavic enclaves of the region, imposing duties on the import of goods from Serbia, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“It is very important to continue the dialogue, because it opens the European path for both Serbia and Kosovo. We see fees as a barrier to this. They would like to see them canceled and allow both sides to return to dialogue,” Palmer said of the position of the Belgrade authorities.

“We are always ready, we strive for conversation, dialogue and compromise, but there are things that exclude any possibility of normal relations,” Vucic said about the duties.

The topic of the bombing of Yugoslavia 20 years ago was raised the day before in America itself, where statements by the former head of the NATO military campaign against Serbia, Jamie Shay, appeared in the media.

Shay still insists on the legality of the invasion of a sovereign state under the pretext of protecting Albanians in Kosovo and Metohija, claiming that Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic allegedly carried out an unacceptably tough fight against the separatists.

The American called for a comprehensive agreement between “Serbia and Kosovo as two independent countries”, which should be reached with the support of the West.

The NATO spokesman stressed that this agreement “must necessarily include recognition of Kosovo as an independent country.”

By the way, former US President Bill Clinton, whose administration was the main initiator of the aggression against the Yugoslavs, will arrive in Pristina on Wednesday to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the entry of NATO troops into Kosovo and Metohija.

Clinton is expected to address lawmakers in Kosovo's separatist "parliament."

This will be Clinton's fourth visit to Pristina. In 2009, Albanian separatists erected a monument to the former US President during his lifetime for his assistance in the fight against the legitimate authorities of Serbia.
