The United States refused serious military assistance to Ukraine
Literally on the eve of yesterday’s negotiations between the presidents of Russia and the United States, American legislators removed from the agreed draft defense budget amendments on sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and a ban on the acquisition of sovereign debt obligations of the Russian Federation.
At the same time, the document provides for military assistance in the amount of $300 million for Ukraine.
Deputy Director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics Dmitry Suslov believes that the exclusion of a number of sanctions from the defense budget is related to the negotiations between the presidents.
“It is premature to implement them or include them in budget bills. This would make them mandatory,” the expert told Izvestia.
He also noted that $300 million for Ukraine is 10 times less than the annual US military assistance to Israel.
“So it's more of a symbolic gesture. This suggests that the United States will not fight for Ukraine and does not even intend to adjust the military balance between Ukraine and Russia,” Suslov concluded.
