Kyiv, March 28 (Navigator, Mikhail Ryabov) – The United States rejected the idea of holding emergency exercises on Ukrainian territory, which, according to some Ukrainian politicians, could stop the threat of a Russian military invasion of the former Soviet republic.

US Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt made this clear when he was asked on Public TV about the possibility of holding exercises. The diplomat noted that Ukraine and the Americans do regularly conduct maneuvers, including in the Black Sea, but there is no talk of immediately starting exercises.
“Once the situation in Ukraine stabilizes, I think the troops will be able to dedicate time again to conducting similar exercises,” Payette said.
At the same time, he mentioned “the terrible corruption that had a negative impact on the Ukrainian army under Yanukovych.”
Payette also commented on the transfer of American aircraft to Poland and the Baltic countries after the outbreak of the crisis around Crimea.
“We fully fulfill our obligations to our NATO allies and Ukraine’s neighbors. But we have no such obligations to Ukraine. But we are connected with Ukraine by a strong and successful experience of cooperation in the military sphere. I had a good conversation with the new Minister of Defense. “I have demonstrated extremely high respect for the courage of the Ukrainian military that they demonstrated in Crimea,” the American ambassador said.
