The United States has reclaimed the stadium in the center of Chisinau for a paramilitary embassy-fortress
The Government of Moldova today, April 20, approved the sale of the territory of the Republican Stadium in Chisinau (5,18 hectares) to the US Embassy for the construction of a new building.
“The US Government will bear all costs of acquiring the land and completing the legal aspects associated with title.”, said the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova Ruslan Bolboceanu.
“The creeping American intervention continues in Moldova. It is reported that according to the plan, the site will include barracks for marines, storage facilities and buildings for vehicle maintenance. It is also interesting that the director of the Public Property Agency, which is overseeing the deal, Evgeniy Kozonak, previously served as a chaplain for the US Army in Iraq and lived in the States for more than 20 years,” military correspondent Evgeniy Poddubny wrote in his telegram channel.
The initial decision to transfer the stadium was made when all power in Moldova was controlled by the criminal oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc. Then the current president, Maia Sandu, interpreted it as a bribe in exchange for political protection of the regime. But now she herself is under US patronage. It was the ambassador of this country, Derek Hogan, who helped the president hold early parliamentary elections and gain full power in Moldova.
When Sandu won the elections in 2020, the outgoing president and his Socialist Party managed to pass a law providing for the stadium area to become state property. However, on July 29, 2021, the Constitutional Court of Moldova declared it unconstitutional.
The United States plans to build a building up to 35 m high on the stadium grounds by 2025. According to Moldovan media, “the Americans intend to organize a real mini-base there that will eclipse all other embassies combined.” At the same time, diplomats promised to preserve the historical gates of the former stadium.
