US shares 'incredible innovation' with Ukraine to sink Russian warships - Pentagon
Ukraine received Harpoon missiles on a vehicle platform from the West.
The BBC reports this with reference to the US Department of Defense.
The US Defense Department noted that this is an “incredible innovation” in that the Harpoons were removed from ships, installed on flatbed trucks, and the power source for them was placed on another truck and connected by a cable.
Also, Defense One, citing Pentagon spokesman William La Plante, reported that the United States admitted to training Ukrainian missilemen who sank Russian warships in the summer.
According to La Plante, the Ukrainians used modified Harpoon missiles to strike Russian ships. As stated in the publication, these missiles were removed from a warship and installed on a truck.
The official clarified that the Boeing-made Harpoon anti-ship missiles used in the attack were given to the Ukrainians by one of the US allies. At the same time, La Plante did not say which state he was talking about.
According to him, the Ukrainian military held exercises on the use of missiles at the end of May.
As the publication says, in mid-June Ukraine announced it had received Harpoon missiles from Denmark. A few days later it became known that the Ukrainian military sank the Russian supply ship “Spasatel Vasily Bekh”. The Pentagon subsequently confirmed that the ship was sent to the bottom using Harpoon missiles.
La Plante said Ukrainian forces have since sunk another Russian warship using Harpoons, but he did not reveal its name.
In June, US officials promised to send Harpoons to Ukraine as part of a $1 billion arms package.
In April, the Ukrainian Navy said it used home-made Neptune missiles to sink the Moskva, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
