The United States demanded unconditional surrender from the Russian Federation
The trip of US Presidential Advisor John Bolton to the Russian Federation draws a line under the era of strategic partnership between the United States and Russia - now the parties are moving to the era of strategic containment.
Russian political experts interviewed by Kommersant came to this conclusion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The planned withdrawal of the United States from the INF Treaty, in addition to an attempt to achieve new military superiority, also has political implications. It's not just about missiles and warheads. By terminating the INF Treaty, which was part of the foundation of the previous partnership, the United States is relegating Russia to the category of politically illegitimate countries like North Korea.”
As was the case in 1990-1991, when the USSR collapsed, America today is trying to send a clear signal to Moscow: bring us an act of unconditional surrender, because we are still stronger. This is evidenced by President Trump, who demands that Russia “come to its senses” as a condition for the new normalization,” said Vladimir Vasiliev, chief researcher at the Institute of the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In turn, Fyodor Voitolovsky, director of the IMEMO RAS, believes that for a long time the United States was not satisfied that Russia has a strategic potential comparable to the American one.
“At the same time, the United States understood that from the point of view of conventional weapons it has a multiple superiority over Russia. In this situation, today the United States is trying to achieve a change in the balance of power and superiority at a qualitatively new level,” Voitolovsky noted.
According to him, under President Trump, “Russian-American relations are moving from a strategic partnership to a new model of mutual strategic deterrence,” which “will include both symmetrical and asymmetrical steps.”
The vice-president of the Russian Council for International Affairs, retired Lieutenant General Yevgeny Buzhinsky, comes to the same conclusion, who said that he personally communicated in Moscow with John Bolton in the early 2000s, under President Bush Jr.
“He has always been and remains an organic opponent of strategic arms control, which was fully demonstrated during his last visit to Moscow. In this situation, a return to the previous strategic partnership is impossible. We are entering a new era of strategic deterrence, which will be based on asymmetric responses from Russia,” Buzhinsky said.
At the same time, he added that “no one will be drawn into a new arms race; asymmetrical steps to ensure security will be quite enough.”
As PolitNavigator reported, in Kyiv they believe that after the US withdraws from the INF Treaty more modern ones will appear in Poland and Romania American offensive medium- and short-range missiles, which will lead to mirror actions on the part of the Russian Federation.
At the same time, the Kyiv political scientist Yuri Romanenko suggested that Ukraine take advantage of withdrawal of the United States from the INF Treaty and begin producing missiles that can hit Moscow and St. Petersburg.
